(LifeSiteNews) â A Catholic school teacher is currently on leave after she mentioned she has rented out her womb as a surrogate.
Jadira Bonilla told a school official in mid-September that she is pregnant as a surrogate, meaning the baby is not her own but that of another couple. She is married and has children with her husband.
âThe teacher says a few days after that conversation, she was called in for a meeting with school and church officials, who told her she may have violated her contract and church tenets,â WPVI reported. âShe has not received written documentation explaining what part of her contract she allegedly violated.â
She teaches at St. Mary School in Vineland, New Jersey. The school is located in the Diocese of Camden.
âItâs been overwhelming. Itâs been stressful, just not knowing where do I go from here, whatâs gonna happen with my job,â she told the news outlet.
She has worked as a surrogate before while teaching at a different school.
Her current employer said it wants to meet with Bonilla to discuss the issue further.
âIt has been our hope to meet with her to help her fully understand the Catholic Churchâs teaching on surrogacy, but that has not happened as of yet,â the school told the media. âMrs. Bonilla is a valued teacher and one we hope will one day again teach in our school with the full knowledge of our faith, which guides our educational principles.â
The Catholic Church considers surrogacy gravely wrong, otherwise known as a mortal sin.
âTechniques that entail the dissociation of husband and wife, by the intrusion of a person other than the couple (donation of sperm or ovum, surrogate uterus), are gravely immoral,â the Catechism of the Catholic Church states. âThese techniques (heterologous artificial insemination and fertilization) infringe the childâs right to be born of a father and mother known to him and bound to each other by marriage.â
Surrogacy also violates the Catholic teaching that a husband and wifeâs body belongs to each other.
The surrogacy business also exploits women worldwide according to a United Nations report.
âCommercial surrogacy, which accounts for the overwhelming majority of surrogacy cases globally, constitutes the sale of children, which is a crimeâ a report of U.N. special rapporteur argued, noting also that âSurrogacy arrangements can amount to or resemble slavery.â
