After thirty-five years of medical practice in state-of-the-art hospitals in the United States and in communities throughout Rwanda, I’ve had thousands of encounters with those facing a serious diagnosis for the first time and those facing their last. I believe in whole patient care that addresses physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual needs. I write on topics that affect me as a member of the sandwich generation and each of you who may also be concerned for aging parents, my children, and grandchildren, and still try to provide self-care. We much collectively think and plan for a time that some of us are here now and all of us will be one day.
