About Juneteenth
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, marks the day when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865. They proclaimed the end of the Civil War and the liberation of all enslaved individuals. This historic event unfolded two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, with an effective date of January 1, 1863.
