OTTAWA (LifeSiteNews) — A group of Canadian MPs is calling on the federal government to mandate that any content created using artificial intelligence (AI) have mandatory labeling.
A recent report released by the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage said that all written, video, or digital content made with AI must be clearly labeled as such in what it says is a standardized label format.
The committee is calling on the AI label to apply to all “relevant sectors,” which would include broadcasters, public institutions, and digital platforms. The committee says a framework for the “systematic and easily identifiable labelling of content” needs to happen.
According to the committee, human-generated content that has the help of AI would be labeled as well. The report included information from a study with information from witnesses from people in film, music, publishing, social media, and the arts.
About half of the witnesses claimed that AI can be used to create more efficient content, and most testimony expressed “profound concerns” with AI tools.
The report discussed the potential job losses from AI-generated content, as well as a rise in “AI slop” and outright false images and content created with these tools.
The committee wants the federal government to amend the Copyright Act so that it also applies to AI-made content.
When it comes to AI, its use has become widespread in many areas, notably in fake written content, fake videos posted on YouTube, as well as bots on social media platforms.
Pope Leo XIV’s forthcoming first encyclical will discuss about the impact of AI, posthumanist theories of technology, and advanced technologies on human dignity, social justice, and labor.
The Canadian federal government has an Artificial Intelligence Minister, Liberal MP Evan Solomon. He recently said he was investigating Elon Musk’s X, and there were rumblings that the federal government might even be looking to ban the platform.
John Carpay, head of the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) and one of Canada’s top constitutional legal experts, warned that Canadians must remain vigilant and that being lazy is “no excuse” to stand by and allow the “takeover” of “free speech” online by government laws.
