Florida high school ends weekly videos teaching students witchcraft after outcry

ORANGE COUNTY, Florida (LifeSiteNews) – A Florida high school has come under fire for playing for students a series of “witchcraft ritual” videos on a weekly basis.

According to a letter Liberty Counsel sent to Orange County Public Schools (OCPS), West Orange High School (WOHS) recently hosted among student video announcements the first of what was to be a series title “Witchy Wednesday,” through which a student intended to “guide you through your magical midweek journey every Wednesday,” starting with discussion of “moon water and releasing rituals” and a “spell for enlightenment” to invite “clarity, wisdom, and light into your life.”

“Students have the right to engage in voluntary student religious speech in a forum open to all,” Liberty Counsel noted, but “many students have sincere Christian religious beliefs that prohibit them from lending their imprimatur to religious instruction (whether delivered by the school as purported government speech, or by a student as religious speech) on spells, witchcraft, magic,” and related concepts.

The letter called on the district to both allow Christian views equal access to the student video announcement system and to allow students and staff who object to witchcraft the opportunity to opt out of future episodes.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that, following public scrutiny of the situation, the school has canceled the segment.

“The segment was delivered over the school’s television system, on the school’s morning announcements under the supervision of school faculty. As such, we cannot constitutionally allow such a segment to continue to take place in the future,” OCPS attorney John Palmerini responded to Liberty Counsel.

“When it comes to what ultimately counts, witchcraft and Christianity (but not witches and Christians) are mortal foes,” warns Richard Howe of the Christian Research Institute. “Without the sacrifice of Christ to wash away our sins and reconcile us to our Maker, there is no hope in the world to come. Witchcraft teaches that our destiny is to return again to this world through reincarnation.”
