John MacArthur, the influential California pastor, Bible teacher, and author, has died at age 86, shortly after being hospitalized with pneumonia.

His ministry, Grace to You, confirmed his death Monday evening (July 14), sharing on social media, “Our hearts are heavy, yet rejoicing, as we share the news that our beloved pastor and teacher John MacArthur has entered into the presence of the Savior. This evening, his faith became sight.”

MacArthur was hospitalized earlier this month, as reported by Christian Daily International, after a series of health challenges that had kept him largely out of the pulpit since mid-2024. Earlier this year, he addressed his congregation via video, acknowledging, “I realize I’m on the last lap” and expressing gratitude for his decades of ministry.

MacArthur served as pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, for over five decades and led The Master’s Seminary and University. Known for his unwavering commitment to Reformed theology, his prolific authorship, and his long-running “Grace to You” radio broadcast, MacArthur also drew controversy for his outspoken critiques of the charismatic movement, his opposition to women preaching, and his defiance of COVID-19 worship restrictions.

He is survived by Patricia, his wife of more than 60 years, four children, 15 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Prominent voices, including theologian Owen Strachan, mourned his passing online, with Strachan calling him a “lion of faith” and urging prayers for his family, congregation, and the many worldwide who were shaped by his ministry.
