(The College Fix) â Bowdoin College conservative students went to bed afraid Sunday after administrators informed the campus of âcredibleâ threats that prompted the cancellation of a vigil honoring Charlie Kirk, a student leader told The College Fix by phone and email.
âDespite being the recipients of this âsupposed threat,â we have not been informed of anything else, so many of my members are living in complete fear,â Bowdoin College Conservatives President Zak Asplin said Monday.
Safa Zaki, president of the private Maine college, issued an announcement Sunday night that the situation was investigated and no longer deemed to be a threat.
However, in an interview Monday morning, Asplin said neither police nor administrators reached out to provide details to the conservative student leaders about the nature of the threat.
âWe went to bed really scared,â he told The Fix. âIâve had students come to me crying their eyes out.â
Asplin and other students organized the vigil for the slain conservative leader for 7:15 p.m. Sunday on Bowdoinâs museum steps. Hundreds of similar events have taken place on campuses across the country since Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed at a speaking event Wednesday at Utah Valley University.
However, at 7 p.m., campus security sent out an email alert, stating the vigil would be postponed due to âcredibleâ threats, The Maine Wire first reported.
âOut of an abundance of caution, we are postponing the vigil that was scheduled for this evening at 7:15 p.m. by the Bowdoin College Conservatives,â the email stated.
âIn the past 15 minutes, we were informed by the Maine State Police of external threats connected to the event. While details remain limited, the information we received is credible enough to require us to take immediate precautionary steps,â it stated.

Two hours later, President Zaki sent another campus-wide email stating that police investigated the matter and âdetermined that there was no continuing threat.â
Zaki said the information provided by police indicated âindividuals not affiliated with Bowdoin planned to come to campus to disrupt the event and cause harm.â
âThe bar for the College to postpone a student event is extraordinarily high and the circumstances in this case met that bar,â she wrote, adding that âliving together across divisions and differences will take our patience, kindness, and respect for one another.â
When contacted by The Fix, Maine State Police spokesperson Shannon Moss said authorities informed the college of a âpotential threatâ regarding the vigil.
âThe Maine Information Analysis Center (MIAC) received an anonymous report about a potential threat related to the vigil. While they were unable to validate the information, they immediately notified Bowdoin College,â Moss said via email Monday.
For Asplin, however, questions remain.
He expressed puzzlement that the threat was âexternalâ because Bowdoin College Conservatives only advertised the event internally to students.
He also wondered about censorship being a motive, telling The Fix that administrators had brought up the possibility of canceling the vigil before the threat was known.
âThe administration was all too willing to cancel it,â he said.
Given what happened, Asplin told The Fix conservative students also are concerned about another event they have planned this fall on campus. He said he just requested additional security from the college and is waiting to hear back.
âThe atmosphere here has always been incredibly oppressive against conservative students, in the minority completely, and now, it is even worse,â he said.
The college did not respond directly to The Fixâs inquiries about communication between the conservative students and administrators about the threat. The Fix also asked about plans to reschedule the vigil and efforts to support free speech on campus.
âBased on information from the Maine State Police, the College decided to postpone the vigil,â spokesperson Douglas Cook responded in an email Monday afternoon. âThe safety and security of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors will always be the Collegeâs top priority. We are grateful for the partnership of our law enforcement agencies.â
