The world is shrouded in darkness. The voices of the innocent cry out for mercy but those in power do not come to their aid.

Babies are murdered. Children are mutilated. Elderly and disabled adults are put down like animals.

In the face of such evil, it’s easy to feel powerless.

The weight of grief and suffering in our world is too much to bear.

The full weight has already been borne by Our Lord Jesus Christ.

He has saved and redeemed mankind on the Cross.

These are the last days in which the Evil One still has power on earth.

Our Lord Jesus Christ is sitting at the right hand of the Father and is preparing for His triumph. St John tells us:

I heard a great voice from the throne, saying: Behold the tabernacle of God with men, and he will dwell with them. And they shall be his people; and God himself with them shall be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes: and death shall be no more, nor mourning, nor crying, nor sorrow shall be any more, for the former things are passed away. (Rev 21:3-4)

God’s victory is coming.

And he that sat on the throne, said: Behold, I make all things new. (Rev 21:5)

There will be a new heaven and a new earth. And the evils that tear apart our hearts will be defeated forever.

The Devil’s hour is almost up.

But until then the battle rages, the innocent suffer – and God calls on us to do our part. 

Jesus has already told us how to be recognized as a member of His flock on that day:

I was hungry, and you gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me to drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in: Naked, and you covered me: sick, and you visited me: I was in prison, and you came to me…. Amen I say to you, as long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to me. (Mt 25: 35-36, 40)

Friends, who are the least of the brethren in our day?

The innocent baby at risk of abortion and the mother being pressured to kill her child.

The grandmother choosing death because she fears being a “burden,” and the father in anguish as his daughter abandons the only way of salvation.

These, and many others, are the least of the brethren today. And their suffering is ignored by those in power.

But you and I can help them.
