A new documentary exploring how the New Testament was written, preserved, and passed down through history is scheduled for a limited theatrical release in the United States on Nov. 2, 3 and 5.
Oracles of God: The Story of the New Testament, produced by CBN Films in partnership with Fathom Entertainment, examines the decades following the resurrection of Jesus, when His followers spread His teachings orally before recording them in writing. The 95-minute film traces how the Gospels were composed by those closest to Jesus, how Paul’s letters circulated among early churches, and how Church Fathers worked to confirm and preserve the texts that became the New Testament.
The production combines historical reenactments, archaeological evidence and interviews with scholars, including New Testament specialist Craig Evans. He said the project addresses long-standing questions about how the Gospels were compiled by drawing on manuscripts, early citations, and archaeological findings, presenting evidence that the texts arose from the first generation of Christians who handled them with care.
Directed by four-time Emmy nominee Erin Zimmerman, the documentary has been in development since 2017. Zimmerman said delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and conflicts in Israel slowed production, but she noted that its release coincides with a time of renewed interest in the Bible and in Jesus’ story.
The film also reflects broader trends cited by the producers, who point to increased Bible sales, online searches about Jesus, and heightened spiritual interest among younger audiences, particularly Gen Z. They frame the project as a contribution to ongoing conversations about faith and the historical roots of Christianity.
Gordon Robertson, executive producer and president of CBN, described the film as an attempt to convey “the drama, the danger, and the divine power” behind the New Testament.
CBN Films has previously released productions blending history and biblical themes, including Zimmerman’s 2017 docudrama In Our Hands: The Battle for Jerusalem, which also screened in theaters through Fathom.
