Pro-lifers warn euthanasia for mentally ill is ‘ticking time bomb’ ahead of Canadian March for Life

OTTAWA, Ontario (LifeSiteNews) — On the eve of today’s 29th annual March for Life in Canada’s capital of Ottawa, Campaign Life Coalition (CLC) staff urged all MPs, along with the Liberal government, to do more to protect “life” and vote against euthanasia, which it said is a “ticking time bomb.”

CLC held a rally on Parliament Hill in Ottawa yesterday, ahead of today’s March for Life, which will see thousands of Canadians march in the capital calling for an end to abortion and for respect for vulnerable lives.

Speaking about Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD), the term used for legal euthanasia in Canada, CLC’s Director of Political Operations Jack Fonseca said, “The next euthanasia time bomb is set to explode on March 17, 2027, when eligibility will automatically expand to mentally ill patients.”

“Bill C-218 would ensure Canada continues to prioritize suicide prevention instead of suicide provision,” Fonseca noted, urging MPs to support the Conservative Private Members’ bill.

As reported by LifeSiteNews, Canada’s Catholic bishops have said that they “support” Bill C-218, which would stop the planned expansion of assisted suicide.

The Liberal government under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and now Mark Carney has worked to expand euthanasia 13-fold since it was legalized in 2016. Canada now has the fastest-growing assisted suicide program in the world. Meanwhile, Health Canada has released a series of studies on advanced requests for assisted suicide.

The expansion of euthanasia for the mentally ill is slated to become law in 2027 as a consequence of the passage of Bill C-7.

Fonseca, speaking about Bill C-218, brought to attention the fact that some provinces, such as Alberta, are “leading the way” in opposition to euthanasia and its expansion.

“Premier Danielle Smith has shown all the provinces the way,” noted Fonseca.

Some provinces, such as Alberta, will soon be placing strong limits on assisted suicide.

Over 5 million dead from abortion in Canada since it was legalized

Speaking at the March for Life Rally, CLC’s Director of Communications Pete Baklinski told the press that the May 14 March for Life will show that thousands of Canadians want the Liberal government to “enact legal protection for all human beings, from conception to natural death.”

He noted how, since abortion was legalized in 1969, over 5 million babies have died by abortion, a statistic he said shows the grim reality of the state of affairs in Canada.

“In our Charter, Canada and the rest of the civilized world recognize that everyone has the right to life,” he noted.

“Yet abortion denies this right to the smallest and most vulnerable members of the human family, the pre-born.”

Baklinski then said that Canada’s pro-life movement remains “strong, peaceful, and determined.”

“We will continue to come to Parliament Hill as long as it takes until our elected leaders hear the cry of the pre-born child and protect every single life, including the pre-born, in law.”

As reported by LifeSiteNews, Toronto’s Cardinal Frank Leo delivered a strong pro-life message before the 29th annual Canadian National March for Life, reiterating the Catholic Church’s full opposition to abortion, IVF, artificial birth control, and euthanasia.

Organizing Canada’s March for Life is the Campaign Life Coalition, which stated that the event marks Canada’s 1969 Day of Infamy when the Liberal government’s Omnibus Bill unleashed legal abortion upon the nation.
