Strong fatherhood: the key to winning the spiritual battle in our time

(LifeSiteNews) — Joining me on this episode of The John-Henry Westen Show are Dr. Dan Schneider, Catholic professor, author, and theologian, and Jesse Romero, Catholic radio host and author. We discussed the new book they co-authored on spiritual warfare, Spiritual Warfare Q and A: For Priests and Laity.

After briefly discussing that they wrote the book because of the daily questions they’d receive about spiritual warfare by email, I asked the authors about the modern contention that while evil is real, the devil and demons don’t actually exist.

Romero emphasized that anyone doubting the existence of demons can look at Sacred Scripture and the perennial teaching of the Church.

“First of all, Sacred Scripture talks about angels and demons, Sacred Tradition talks about angels and demons. The Fourth Lateran Council, which actually defined it as de fide, angels and demons,” he said. “It’s in all the Catholic prayers, for example, the St. Michael the Archangel prayer. … The fact of the matter is even Muslims believe in demons, even Jews believe in demons. So this isn’t something that’s particular just to Catholics.”

Schneider, echoing these sentiments, noted that many don’t believe in the existence of literal angels and demons because of the modernist training that many priests, theologians, and fellows have received in recent decades.

“To this day, I don’t know if there’s a single seminary that teaches angelology and cosmology from anthropogony, from that perspective. So there’s a real dearth … in scholarship among Catholics,” he said.

“So (in) the Catholic Church … beginning with Father (Gabriel) Amorth … in the ’80s … there’s been a real movement (where) we recognize evil, it’s becoming so blatantly obvious,” he added. “So what happened … in my observation, is that we jumped in a little late. … And so the gap was kind of filled by Protestant charismatic movements inside the Catholic Church that started doing models that are not necessarily based on Catholic tradition. We fight an ancient enemy, and the ancient weapons are best.”

A bit later in the episode, I asked Dan and Jesse about how spiritual warfare might look different depending on one’s vocation. Romero underscored that, regardless of vocation, everyone is called to holiness using the ordinary means that God asks of us through our state in life, with strong faith and love.

Schneider stressed one critical point in the spiritual battle for married couples that is often overlooked in our modern age: for women to be subordinate to their husbands, and for husbands to protect their wives.

“We don’t like that word, ‘Be subordinate…’ A woman is subordinate to her husband. And so Ephesians chapter 5, ‘Wives, be subordinate,’ all it means… (is) to be ordered under,” he said. “It’s a military term, and Paul’s getting ready to go into Ephesians 6 on a military analogy for spiritual combat. We wage war … not against flesh and blood, but the powers and principalities. And the key to beginning that is getting order in the home.”

“The authority structure has two ends set up by God: to provide and to protect. And so provision and protection, this is what a man is called (to do),” he added. “You provide through blessing, protection, and provision. And that’s what a husband is supposed to do, take his family, his wife, and his children, place them behind him, hold up his shield and his sword, and defend his home.”
