Top doctor spreads false claim that abortion pill cannot be reversed

(LifeSiteNews) — Pro-abortion doctor Diane Francoeur has repeated the lie that the abortion pill cannot be reversed.

During a September 18 interview with the Toronto Star, Francoeur, executive director of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC), falsely claimed that the abortion pill is irreversible.

“No, no, no!” Francoeur said to the suggestion that large doses of progesterone can reverse the effects of the abortion pill.

“With the abortion pill, you have to make your choice beforehand. And after that, well, you live with it,” she stated.

Ironically, the interview aimed to dispel “misinformation” regarding women’s health but instead spread a false claim by disregarding the life-saving ability of abortion pill reversal (APR) methods.

The APR, while not 100 percent effective, has saved many babies whose mothers have regretted taking the first pill in a series meant to kill their unborn child.

The most common form of chemical abortion uses two abortion drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol, with one taken after the other. If the woman regrets her abortion after taking the first pill, there is a short time that the pill can be reversed.

APR works by giving the mother progesterone to counteract the abortion drug mifepristone, which kills unborn children by blocking progesterone, a naturally occurring hormone needed to sustain pregnancy.

Campaign Life Coalition’s Jack Fonseca told LifeSiteNews that there is a spiritual reason why pro-abortion activists lie to women regarding APR.

“The demons who inspire the abortion industry are constantly demanding child sacrifice,” he revealed. ” They want to kill every human baby possible, and the abortion pill reversal procedure disturbs their infernal lust for human blood.”

“Another reason is a psychological coping mechanism,” he explained. “Most abortion activists have committed or been involved in abortions themselves, and to see a woman who was once in their shoes, escape the same path and choose life for their baby, is a painful reminder of both the evil they committed and of the precious life they. In a twisted way, pulling others into your own misery is a way to try to ease your own conscience.”

“A third reason is a type of defensive strategy for the abortion industry itself,” Fonseca continued. “If lots of women are successfully reversing their chemical abortions, it may cause others to question, ‘Why did they choose to reverse it? Was there something morally wrong with their initial decision?'”

“Along the same lines, with successful abortion pill reversals, you often end up creating mothers who become pro-life activists, which is also a threat to the pro-abortion narrative,” he revealed.

“We must oppose every effort by these medical colleges to try to restrict access to abortion pill reversal as an option,” Fonseca declared.

This is not the first time that Francoeur has publicly denounced APR methods. In November 2024, she not only told women that “there’s no going back,” but falsely claimed that the APR procedure is “completely dangerous and useless,” despite studies proving that progesterone does not pose an increased risk to maternal or fetal health and that “mifepristone antagonization with progesterone is a safe and effective treatment.”

The United Kingdom’s Dr. Dermot Kearney, who won a legal battle to continue offering the APR to women in need, responded to Francoeur’s false statement on X.

“She’s either poorly informed or else she’s telling a fib,” he wrote. “More than 7,000 babies’ lives have been saved by APR and more than 7,000 mothers have been spared a lifetime of regret. The success rate & safety record of APR is truly extraordinary. Nobel prize territory for the pioneers.”

Indeed, research has proved that the APR is estimated to have saved more than 5,000 unborn children. Additionally, pro-life OB/GYN Dr. William Lile has explained that the technique is based on principles that are well understood from progesterone’s common, FDA-approved use in a variety of other pregnancy-related situations.

According to the Abortion Pill Rescue Network (APRN), “initial studies of APR have shown it has a 64-68% success rate.” Heartbeat International also publishes anecdotal, firsthand testimonials from women who have benefited from the technique.

Francoeur is hardly the first pro-abortion activist to denounce the APR as pro-abortion activists routinely attack the method as “dangerous” and attempt to prevent women from access the lifesaving medication.
