(LifeSiteNews) â The Vatican released the texts for the new votive Mass âfor the care of creationâ Thursday and announced that Pope Leo XIV will use the new prayers for a private Mass with a group at Castel Gandolfo next week.
At 10 a.m. Rome time on July 3, the Holy See Press Office published a decree âon the formulary and Biblical readings for the Mass for the Care of Creationâ â signed by the prefect of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Cardinal Arthur Roche, and his secretary Archbishop Vittorio Viola, OFM â and held a press conference for the release of the same.
The new formulary for the Mass âpro custodia creationis,â approved by Pope Leo XIV, has been added to the Masses âpro variis necessitatibus vel ad diversa,â or votive Masses, of the Roman Missal.

According to the decree, and making reference to Pope Francisâ encyclical letter Laudato siâ (LS), it was âconsidered appropriateâ by the dicastery to institute the new Mass formulary since âit is evident that the work of creation is seriously threatened because of the irresponsible use and abuse of the goods God has endowed to our care (cf. Laudato siâ n. 2).â
Vatican News announced Thursday that Pope Leo XIV âwill celebrate the first âMass for the Care of Creationââ on July 9 in a private occasion with the staff of the âBorgo Laudato SĂŹâ,â an educational group established by Pope Francis at Castel Gandolfo to promote âecological conversion,â according to his encyclical letter.
The formulary includes a new Introit, Collect, Secret, Communion antiphon, and Postcommunion, as well as specially selected lections for the readings, Gospel, Alleluia versicle, and Psalms:
- Introit: âCĂŠli enĂĄrrant glĂłriam Dei, et Ăłpera mĂĄnuum eius annĂșntiat firmamĂ©ntum.â â The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims the work of His hands.
- Collect: âPater, qui in Christo, primogĂ©nito omnis creatĂșrĂŠ, univĂ©rsa ad exsistĂ©ntiam vocĂĄsti, prĂŠsta, quÇœsumus, ut, dĂłciles SpĂritus tui spirĂĄculo vitĂŠ, Ăłpera mĂĄnuum tuĂĄrum in caritĂĄte custodiĂĄmus. Per DĂłminum.â â Father, who in Christ the firstborn of all creation, called all things into existence, grant, we beseech thee, that, docile to the breath of thy Spirit, we may preserve the works of thy hands in charity. Through the Lord.
- Secret: âSĂșscipe, Pater, hos fructus terrĂŠ nostrarĂșmque mĂĄnuum: pĂ©rfice in eis opus creatiĂłnis tuĂŠ ut, a SpĂritu Sancto transformĂĄti, cibus et potus vitĂŠ ĂŠtĂ©rnĂŠ pro nobis fiant. Per Christum.â â Receive, Father, these fruits of the earth and of our hands: complete in them the work of your creation so that, transformed by the Holy Spirit, they may become for us the food and drink of eternal life. Through Christ.
- Communion antiphon: âVidĂ©runt omnes tĂ©rmini terrĂŠ salutĂĄre Dei nostri.â â All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
- Postcommunion: âSacramĂ©ntum unitĂĄtis quod accĂ©pimus, Pater, communiĂłnem tecum ĂĄugeat fratribĂșsque ut, novos cĂŠlos et terram novam exspectĂĄntes, conveniĂ©nter una cum Ăłmnibus creatĂșris vĂvere discĂĄmus. Per Christum.â â May the sacrament of unity that we have received, O Father, increase our communion with you and our brothers and sisters, so that, awaiting the new heavens and the new earth, we may learn to live in harmony with all creatures. Through Christ.

Presenting the new Mass texts were Cardinal Michael Czerny, S.J., prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, and Archbishop Vittorio Francesco Viola, OFM, secretary of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.
Speaking at the Thursday morning press conference, Viola explained the rationale behind the choice of prayers for the Mass, referencing heavily from Pope Francis and his encyclical Laudato siâ and the latterly published apostolic exhortation, Laudate Deum, âOn the climate crisis.â
Viola said the new votive Mass âtakes up some of the main positions contained in LS and expresses them in the form of a prayer within the theological framework that the encyclical revives.â
As an example, the prelate noted that the Offertory prayer âtakes up and amplifies the words of the presentation of the gifts in a manner that encapsulates the theological concepts that inspire our liturgical contemplation of creation,â stating, âthe entire history of salvation, of which creation is the foundation and beginning, culminates in the Lordâs Passover; the liturgy makes the paschal mystery present in a sacramental manner, renders it real and reveals its efficacy; in continuity with the logic of the Incarnation, what God has created and the work of human hands (bread, wine, oil, waterâŠ) reach their full meaning in the celebratory action; their nobility demands our contemplative gaze on created things, which changes our relationship with them.â
Likewise, Viola said that in the lections for the âMass for the care of creationâ the readings âmay be seen as presenting a âchallengeâ and an opportunity to commit to practicing the corrected hermeneutics of biblical textsâ which he said were âemphasizedâ by Pope Francis in Laudato siâ.
âWithout such correction,â Viola said, âone risks supporting positions that are inconsistent with the truth of Revelation and holding, for example, the attitude that LS 69 defines as âdistorted anthropocentrism.ââ
Archbishop Czerny added that the new formulary came âin response to requests suggested by Laudato siâ.â He stated that, for âthe past decadesâ the Church has âcontinually affirmed the âmutual responsibility between human beings and natureâ (LS 67),â and asked that the new Mass prayers might âhelp us to learn how to careâ for creation which âis always already present in the Catholic liturgy.â
To this end, the prelate stated his hope that the Mass acts as a call âto be faithful stewards of what God has entrusted to us â not only in daily choices and public policies, but also in our prayer, our worship, and our way of living in the world.â
âWith this Mass,â Czerny stated, âthe Church is offering liturgical, spiritual, and communal support for the care we all need to exercise of nature, our common home. Such service is indeed a great act of faith, hope, and charity.â
Concluding, Viola said Mass texts âare a good antidote against a certain reading of LS that risks reducing the depth of its content to a âfalse or superficial ecologyâ (LS 59) far removed from that âintegral ecologyâ amply described and promoted in the encyclical (cf. LS chap. IV).â
